William Walton’s sumptuous Belshazzar’s Feast was originally commissioned in1929 by the BBC who asked for a “small-scale choral work” which would be suitable for a radio broadcast. Walton didn’t take to heart the “small-scale” part of the commission and produced a work that required orchestral and choral forces far too large to be accommodated in the original studio venue. At a length of 35 minutes, Belshazzar’s Feast is easily one of the most exciting choral and orchestral masterworks of the early 20th century!
