Singing for Seniors
The Singing for Seniors Program of the Larimer Chorale
The Larimer Chorale, the 115-member auditioned symphonic chorus that has been performing major concerts for 35 years, is launching a new program called “Singing for Seniors.” We know that singing is fun and that it is good for the mind, body, and spirit and so we are creating this program to provide an avenue for active and older adults to engage in recreational singing. Through Singing for Seniors the Chorale will form a city-wide choir that will be open to all in the community who self-identify as seniors and who want to sing for the joy of it. The Singing for Seniors program will be led by a licensed music therapist, who will select warm-up exercises and musical numbers that are uniquely designed to maximize the benefits of community singing.
Where and when will the Senior Choir rehearse?
The rehearsals for the pilot project (May through October) will take place weekly from 10:00 to 11:30 on Tuesday mornings. We have accepted Plymouth Congregational Church’s offer to host the program. In the event there is a conflict with their space, we have been invited to use Shepherd of the Hills as a back-up location.
Who can join the Senior Choir?
The only requirement for admittance into Senior Choir is a desire to sing. Even the word “senior” is self-defined. We will work hard to accommodate all those with special needs. Choir members will not need to read music. If you can join AARP, you can join our choir!
How big will the choir be?
We need at least 8 people. We can accommodate up to 75. We may not be able to sing parts or harmony if there are not enough voices for each section. The selection of music will depend on the size of the choir and the balance of the voices.
What will we sing?
Each rehearsal will start with stretching and movement. Once we’re warmed up, we’ll start singing – hymns, folk songs, classic rock and roll, big band era tunes – whatever our conductors select. We’ll ask for your suggestions too.
Will the Senior Choir perform?
This decision will be up to the choir. After a few rehearsals, we can judge whether or not there is an interest in public performances.
How will you pay for the Senior Choir?
We will use grant/sponsorship funds to get the program started and to provide salaries or stipends to our project coordinator, conductors, and music therapist. We will ask participants to make a voluntary contribution of $1.00 per rehearsal. .
What if I can’t drive to rehearsal?
If you live in one of the participating senior residences, we will ask your activity director to provide transportation. We’ll also enlist volunteers to drive those who need assistance and encourage members to car-pool.
